Picnic Perfection

Traveling sometimes makes us feel that we need to spoil ourselves by eating at expensive, fancy restaurants yet when I was in Nice, France recently I found that my favorite meals were our picnic lunches on the beach. Our first day we picked up the essentials (bread, cheese, cured meats and wine) for a quintessential french picnic and the other days we bought ingredients to make homemade sandwiches (and of course more bottles of wine). Part of what I found so fun about these picnics was shopping at the local grocery market and really getting a taste for the local culture and people. Whether we were having issues with not having the right change and struggling with the language barrier or becoming giddy about how cheap the wine was, it made the experience unique and made getting lunch almost like a mini vacation adventure.

What I found most fun about these days was that they were unplanned and relaxed. We would start the day off with a jog along the coast, hit up the store on the way back, head home to get things ready for the day, go to the beach to enjoy some sun and our picnic then end the day strolling around the town sightseeing, souvenir shopping and scoping out places to eat for dinner. If you have time on your next vacation to set aside a day or two to do something similar I would highly recommend it. It's a great way to experience wherever you are and spend some time truly relaxing on your vacation!
